Happiness vs. Fulfillment

We’ve all heard the saying: “money doesn’t buy you happiness” but is it true? I don’t think so. I think that money does in fact buy you happiness and money can make you very happy which is why people can be obsessed with trying to get it. Think back to the last time you bought something; did it make you happy? That new car? The vacations? The help you are able to hire to free up your time? All of these are things that money can buy and have the potential to bring happiness to your life.

The problem here is that happiness is a temporary emotion just like the rest of our fleeting emotions. Here today and gone again tomorrow.

Although money can in fact make you happy, what it can never do is make you fulfilled. What is fulfillment? It is completion, it is being satisfied and it is a sense of achievement through finding your purpose that God has given you in your heart. Fulfillment is long term and isn’t a result of one thing but is a process developed through the ups and downs of life. Fulfillment is lasting while happiness is fleeting.

Currently, I am reading a book by Tony Robbins called: “Money, Master the Game” it talks mainly about finances and achieving financial freedom, but this is specifically a topic that Tony goes over which is what inspired me to write about this! He says that despite who you are, what your beliefs are, and where you are from that all people want the same thing: to be happy. We chase the things that we think will make us happy and maybe they do make us happy, but then we have to find the next thing that will make us happy because it is temporary.

A quote I love and believe makes the point of happiness vs fulfillment very clear is: “success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure” -Tony Robbins

I believe that each one of us was put on this planet for a purpose. Think about it, the odds that you were born into this world are 1 in 400 trillion! 1 in 400 trillion chances to be born as any other human or to not even make the cut and yet here we are. You have a purpose. You already know what it is that you are gifted in or you probably have a slight clue of the things that you enjoy or skills you have developed over the years.

So now what? You know or think you have an idea of your purpose or of what would bring your life and your soul deep fulfillment in life...what are the next steps?

It is known that there are 6 Human Needs which drive us to be who we are and make the choices we do, they are: certainty, variety, significance, love/connection, growth and contribution. The last two of these needs are known as the “spiritual needs” that help to fulfill our purpose. Growth and contribution are so important because that is when you are able to share what you have with others to bless someone’s life or make a positive impact in the world.

I’m sure we have all heard the verse in the Bible that says “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35) well, that’s because it’s true! Have you ever experienced being a blessing in someone’s life or giving a generous donation that changes someone's life? It is way more fulfilling to bless someone than to receive the blessing.

We are called to live out our purpose and to live our most free, full, abundant and biggest life possible. Why? Because that allows us to overflow into the lives of others in big and even small ways. Through this we make a difference in the world and that is so much more rewarding than a moment of happiness that money can bring.

What does true fulfillment and joy look like to you? What do you believe your purpose is on this earth?

Let me know in the comments. Thank you for reading :)
